How to Choose a BMS for 4S / 8S / 16S LiFePO4 Packs

Practical selection guide for Jiabaida (JBD)–class smart BMS boards used on DIY and OEM LiFePO4 packs. BattCrate coordinates supply of these boards and is not a JBD authorized agent. Board revision and options are confirmed per quotation.

1. Match series count first

Pack BMS series BattCrate examples
12.8 V (4S) 4S BC-BMS-001 (150A + heating + BT), BC-BMS-002 (100A + BT)
25.6 V (8S) 8S config of multi-S board BC-BMS-003
51.2 V (16S) 16S BC-BMS-004 (UART/RS485/CAN + heating; no Bluetooth — heating confirmed per version), BC-BMS-005 (BT + UART)

A board family that “supports 5–16S” still needs the configured series for your pack — state 8S or 16S explicitly in the RFQ.

2. Continuous current vs inverter / load

  • Size continuous current to the sustained discharge (and charge) you expect, not only the inverter nameplate peak.
  • Peak / pulse ratings (when published) are short-duration; do not treat them as continuous.
  • If the maker peak table is not in the public manual for that version, we leave peak blank and confirm on quote — we do not invent amps.

3. Heating, Bluetooth, and low-temp charge

Feature What it means for buyers
Heating support Board has a heating-film interface; film is usually separate and matched to the pack. Useful for cold-climate charging.
Bluetooth App monitoring (e.g. Xiaoxiang Electric). Confirm module is included for the exact version quoted.
Low-temp charge protection Stops charge below a threshold even if heating is absent. Confirm whether your board version includes it.

Heating and low-temp protection are related but not the same — ask for both in the RFQ if the pack will sit outdoors in winter.

4. Communication and inverter link

  • DIY / app-centric builds: UART + Bluetooth is often enough (DP04S007 / SP16S020 class).
  • Inverter-linked home storage: prefer boards with RS485 / CAN and confirm protocol against the buyer’s inverter model (UP16S010 class).
  • Isolated RS485 and heating are often options on the same family — inclusion is stated in the quotation.

5. Weak-signal / switch and protection basics

Confirm in the RFQ (not assumed from a photo):

  • Common port vs separate charge/discharge port
  • External NTC count and placement
  • Passive balancing current range
  • Overcurrent / short-circuit behaviour
